IRELAND CAN BUILD ON ITS GREEN CREDENTIALS May 28, 2008 "Ireland needs to build on its green and clean image when educating UK consumers and retailers about Irish grown amenity produce," says Joseph Blair, Director of Horticulture Network Ireland (HNI). He adds that Ireland's close proximity to the UK market means that it shares a relatively similar carbon footprint. This is a distinct advantage in terms we have over many other European competitors. Now more than ever, consumers are taking the time to check labeling for origin of a product in relation to its carbon footprint. He also argues that these issues, as well as ethical production techniques, have become tools used to convince the public of a product's green credentials. In order to lead from the front, HNI and the IEA are currently investigating their options in attaining the status of a carbon neutral organisation. This process happens in three separate stages:
